Taking a break: Paused accretion in the symbiotic binary RT Cru

چکیده

Symbiotic binaries sometimes hide their symbiotic nature for significant periods of time. There is mounting observational evidence that, in symbiotics that are powered solely by the accretion red giant’s wind material onto a white dwarf, without any quasi-steady shell burning on surface characteristic emission lines optical spectrum can vanish, leaving semblance an isolated giant spectrum. Here we present compelling this disappearance from RT Cru 2019 was due to decrease rate, which derived modeling X-ray This drop rate leads lower flux ionizing photons and thus faint or absent photoionization We observed dwarf with XMM-Newton Swift X-rays UV collected ground-based spectra photometry obtained over last 33 yr. long-term coverage shows during most year 2019, so low, Ṁ = (3.2 ± 0.06) × 10 −11 M ⊙ yr −1 (d/2.52 kpc) 2 , historically detected hard almost vanished, faded roughly 5 mag, U B V flickering amplitude decreased, Balmer virtually disappeared January through March. Long-lasting low-accretion episodes such as one reported here may hamper chances experiencing nova-type outburst despite high mass accreting dwarf.

The Nature of the Hard-x-ray Emitting Symbiotic Star Rt Cru

We describe Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer observations of RT Cru, the first of a new sub-class of symbiotic stars that appear to contain white dwarfs (WDs) capable of producing hard X-ray emission out to greater than 50 keV. The production of such hard X-ray emission from the objects in this sub-class (which also includes CD −57 3057, T CrB, and CH Cyg) challenges our un...

Swift OBSERVATIONS OF HARD X-RAY EMITTING WHITE DWARFS IN SYMBIOTIC STARS

The X-ray emission from most accreting white dwarfs (WDs) in symbiotic binary stars is quite soft. Several symbiotic WDs, however, produce strong X-ray emission at energies greater than ∼ 20 keV. The Swift BAT instrument has detected hard X-ray emission from 4 such accreting WDs in symbiotic stars: RT Cru, T CrB, CD −57 3057, and CH Cyg. In one case (RT Cru), Swift detected X-rays out to greate...

Wind accretion in binary stars – II. Accretion rates

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is used to estimate accretion rates of mass, linear and angular momentum in a binary system where one component undergoes mass loss through a wind. Physical parameters are chosen such as to model the alleged binary precursors of barium stars, whose chemical peculiarities are believed to result from the accretion of the wind from a companion formerly on the ...
